Countries with High Social Capital Top New Entrepreneurship Ranking
A new report released today by Prodem and the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN) suggests the conditions that lead to entrepreneurial activity are on a positive upward trend as the world learns to live with COVID-19.
The latest edition of the Index of Dynamic Entrepreneurship, released for the fifth consecutive year during Global Entrepreneurship Week, examines 10 key indicators for entrepreneurship across 46 countries: entrepreneurs human capital, culture, education, social conditions, business structure, demand conditions, financing, policies and regulations, social capital and the contribution of companies and institutions in science, technology and innovation.
An analysis of these indicators, alongside those of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, also shows a significant correlation between SDGs, conditions for entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial activity.
“The more committed attention a country pays to the SDGs and the improvement of systemic conditions for dynamic entrepreneurship, the stronger the benefits for the population and its future development, especially in countries with nascent and unbalanced conditions for entrepreneurship,” said Hugo Kantis, director of Prodem.
Key findings from the report include:
- Netherlands surpassed the United States at the top of the rankings for the first time. Germany, Norway and Sweden round out the top five global ranking for dynamic entrepreneurship.
- The highest-ranking countries are those with high levels of social capital that allows for strong networks and co-operation.
- Two of three countries analyzed showed increases in demand conditions for entrepreneurship compared to the height of the pandemic.
- Nearly half of the countries analyzed showed increased levels of human capital and access to financing.
- One concern emerging, over half of the countries analyzed showed a five per cent or higher decline in favorable government policies and regulations for entrepreneurship.
“While many governments moved at previously-unseen speeds to launch support packages for businesses during the pandemic, the recovery and more recent global headwinds have distracted many governments from further pro-entrepreneurship reforms, which risks holding back entrepreneurial growth,” said Jonathan Ortmans, president of the Global Entrepreneurship Network.
