Emad Kooheji, Co-Founder & CEO of doobi, explains that he designed the app as a digital personal helper, to help reduce the laundry tasks of people who are so busy with no time to do laundry… and as a value-added service for those who seek the fast and easy convenience of household services.

When and how did the company start? What is your inspiration? or immediate goal when you started the company?
The company started as a simple idea in April of 2021, we personally felt the need to reimagine the laundry industry due to the complexity of the laundry business in Bahrain and had the goal to simplify the laundry sector to the extent where everyone can easily understand and use doobi’s services. Another factor that the laundry industry was lacking, and which we felt was significantly important is customer centricity. We made it one of the main aspects to focus on when we started doobi, as customer satisfaction comes first before anything else.
doobi is an on-demand laundry service that aims to make laundry simple, accessible, and affordable for all. We provide an intuitive app that is easy to use, plus a fun and colorful laundry bag system that is color coded based on our 4 services, namely: Casuals, Delicates, Home and Press. Most importantly, we guarantee an awesome customer support which always makes customers happy.
The uniqueness of doobi lies in the combination of what we offer and how we offer it. doobi’s bag concept simplifies customer options to four main services, which a customer can add to their items, then our experts decide which ones need to be separated based on color, and other considerations such as hand washing, dry cleaning or machine washing. In addition, customers are provided a reasonable pricing system which is calculated not per item, but is based on the bag system we designed exclusively.
We provide a personalized experience for the customers. They can add their special requests like choosing a scent, starch level, type of folding and any specification for consideration, then, simply add the bag to the cart, schedule the pickup and delivery with customized options such as leaving the bag at the door, after which you have the advantage of being able to track your order along the way.
The beauty of doobi lies in its inclusivity. We make the service accessible to all market segments regardless of what your day-to-day lifestyle may be, as clothing care is a key part of all our lives. However, our current primary market consists of Bahraini and non-Bahraini families, newlyweds and working individuals between the age group of 25-48 as we target busy individuals who need the convenience of our services the most.
Like any startup business, we encounter various challenges, but the main challenge in our day-to-day operations is how we keep up with growing demands. This includes sudden huge orders beyond our normal capacity. However, our streamlined operations are the main reason why we are able to cope and adopt to changing purchasing habits. And we are currently expanding our supply chain management processes and systems to accommodate our customers’ needs and growing demands.
Our training differs from one role to another based on the skills needed and the personality of an employee. First, we ensure that our employees undergo the Myers-Briggs personality test in addition to directly communicating with the employee about their preference to help us understand the most suitable method to approach them by. For example, our customer experience specialist was initially trained using role-playing and hands-on training to consider different points-of-view and to challenge her to think on the spot.
We also believe in autonomy and the freedom to make decisions to help build the dependability of our team and create leaders who take initiatives. This creates a motivated environment and a team who know they are believed in.
Another factor we consider is important, is the flexibility we give our team. We provide them with the choice to work from home, choose their own work timings based on workload and we offer an open limit for leave days, as we prioritize productivity and results over amount of work hours; and we have seen tremendous outcomes from this approach.
We aspire to become the new standard in providing laundry services. We aim to be a key global player starting from the Middle East, and expand around the world in the next five years. We have also set scaling plans in place for every quarter of the upcoming years.
